It was very quiet, the stars quickly being hidden by the canopy as they walked into the native forest. Sebastian lapsed into silence, filming as they walked behind Sue. The only sounds their footsteps and the occasional rustle of something in the underbrush. It was a hot night, but under the trees it became cooler. Basil kept his eyes on the path, afraid of tripping and falling and being on Sebastian’s show again as the witch who fell down.

A thought occurred to him then, about why Sue had called his mother in the first place. Why his mother? He’d thought that as far as everyone knew, Dawn and Russ were just retired hippies, like most of the population of Surfdale seemed to be.

“Uh, Sue?” he said, feeling terribly obvious to be breaking the silence to talk.

“Mm?”

“What uh, what were you expecting when you called Dawn about this?”

“Oh, I thought she’d come down and help us out, I forgot you were staying,” Sue said, lightly.

“Help out…” Basil said, softly. “Do you mean…?” he wasn’t sure how to finish the sentence. He had no idea how much she knew after all.

“Yeah, do a spell and set it to rest maybe,” Sue said. “I mean, a few of the yarn bombers have traces of magic, but nothing like Dawn. I guess she thinks you’ve inherited her powers and can handle it okay?”

Basil stopped walking for a moment. Sebastian, who had been a step behind, put his hand on his lower back and the warmth reassured Basil enough to keep going. “So uh, I suppose you all know about… uh, witchcraft then?”

“Oh, didn’t you know that we knew?” Sue stopped and turned to look at her, stricken. “I didn’t think she’d have sent you if you didn’t, Marjorie said -” she cut herself off and shook her head. “I’m sorry, I think, uh, I stepped in it there. We’re meant to pretend we don’t know, aren’t we?”

“Meant to pretend?” Basil echoed back.

She shook her head. “Let’s get this thing sorted out and then we can talk about the community, shall we?”

Basil’s stomach turned over unpleasantly but she was right, they needed to focus on the matter at hand.

Sue turned a corner and when they followed the path opened up to a small rest area, with three park benches. These were decorated with knitted patterns, something about which tugged at Basil’s memory. The area was crowded with ten people, most of them looking concerned, or worried rather than terrified.

Sebastian inhaled sharply and Basil looked at him and then at what he was pointing his camera at. The tenth figure, which Basil had barely glanced at before his attention went to the benches and the knitted patterns, was not human. It looked human-ish, with two legs and a head and all the facial features in the right place, but it wasn’t human.

“And this is the uh, being you… found?”

“They didn’t find me,” the being said. The voice was rough and gravelly, but Basil didn’t get a masculine feeling off of it.
